My Mary Kay career
started in 1990 when my boys were 4 and 9 years old. I
had been a stay-at-home mom, and was proud to be,
however, I was feeling like I was missing out. Also,
after being home for such a long time and living in a
rural area I had become rather withdrawn and was rapidly
losing my confidence.
Before children, I had
worked as a secretary, however, every time I decided I
might like to go back to work, the thought of leaving my
boys to go to a day care after school or, worse yet,
coming home to an empty house; I just couldn’t
do it, Also, having been out of the work force
for 10 years I would have had to go to school to retrain
in computers and that was expensive and, usually at
night. As fate would have it, a friend, Marlene, who was
a Mary Kay consultant invited me to attend a glamour
event in Kelowna. Well, a night out, and in Kelowna! It
took me an entire day to prepare to be away from my
family for the evening and to get myself prettied up
enough to go out - oh my! Looking back, I am so grateful
for Mary Kay and to Marlene for inviting me to that
event. I was impressed. Not just with the event but with
the women I met that night. They were so professional,
so happy and so positive. On the way home I asked a lot
of questions. Marlene gave me the Mary Kay autobiography
to read and I couldn’t put it down. That weekend, I
spoke to my husband, Stan, about becoming a consultant
and he said "only if you can have fun at it - if it
becomes stressful, it’s not going to be worth it".
Hence, my motto "The more fun I have, the more money
I make."
Did I know I
would become successful at Mary Kay? No.
Did I have to overcome any obstacles? You bet.
What gave me the courage to start my
business was the 90% buy back. Mary Kay said "I believe
in women and their abilities 90%, I’m just asking them
to believe in themselves, 10% - well, that was about the
percentage of belief I had at the time. My thought
process was - if I try Mary Kay for a year and I don’t
like it, I can quit and get most of my money back - if I
like it, I can stay. If nothing else, I should build up
my confidence enough that I can go back into the work
force and get a real job. Well, I am happy to tell you,
this is my real job and I am able to say I found
something I love to do! They say if you find something
you love to do, you’ll never work another day in your
life - so, if you ask me if I work hard in Mary Kay, I
can’t tell you I do. My strongest attributes are
consistency (I do some Mary Kay every day) and I love
people.
